Pentecost Prayer
Today as we come to worship let’s read together the following prayer and speak out the parts in bold as an affirmation of our commitment.
God of wind and fire bring us today the surprises of your Spirit. As we
gather together in mind and spirit but bodily apart this Sunday again like
so many others recently, we may be shy or sluggish, tired or timid, and
without expectations of a new birth. So come among us, burn up our fears
in the heat of your love; blow through our minds with the joyous freedom
of your Spirit. Make us your church scattered around Sandhurst and
beyond a crucible of love and joy, where your kingdom is coming.
With wind and fire from heaven,
Lord, energize your Church.
God of foreign tongues, you have taken your message to the corners of
the earth. Not just Parthians, Medes and Elamites, but Chinese, Nepalese
and Korean. We pray for those who follow your living Word with the
written word, those who translate the Bible, and interpret and teach the
faith. In particular we pray for our linked mission partners abroad in:
Turcik belt ministries and Arabella Boys Home. May we learn afresh from
them about the vitality of churches filled with your living presence. And
those around our area who serve our community in the All-Night Café,
Christopher’s Smile, Yeldall Manor, Sandhurst Day Centre, RPH and our
Nepalese Community.
With wind and fire from heaven,
Lord, energize your Church.
God of the Church, which was born this happy morning, make us powerful
in proclamation, as Peter was powerful that first day of Pentecost when
3,000 people were baptised. As the massive fallout of that great day
continues, so thousands of people start the Christian journey every day all
over the world. Make us a church here at Sandhurst Baptist Church where
people will also find new life and hope. Make us attractive as a church
through the love and joy which spill out naturally from our faith and the
way we live our lives.
With wind and fire from heaven,
Lord, energize your Church.
God of the silence that followed the storm, we know you to be a God who
acts where your people give you space and freedom to do so.
We offer you that space now as we wait in silence for you to come to us,
to speak to us, to be with us however you want ……….
Lord, what we know not, teach us.
what we are not, make us.
what we dare not, inspire us to do,
as we pray:
With wind and fire from heaven,
Lord, energize your Church.
Amen

Song: Send the fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg-tJ4ud6iY
O God of burning cleansing flame, send the fire.
Your blood-bought gift today we claim, send the fire today.
Look down and see this waiting host and send the promised Holy Ghost
We need another Pentecost, send the fire today.
Send the fire today.
God of Elijah hear our cry, send the fire.
And make us fit to live or die, send the fire today.
To burn up every trace of sin; to bring the light and glory in.
The revolution now begin; send the fire today.
Send the fire today.
It’s fire we want for fire we plead; send the fire.
The fire will meet our every need; send the fire today.
For strength to always do what’s right; for grace to conquer in the fight,
For power to walk the world in white, send the fire today.
Send the fire today.
To make our weak hearts strong and brave send the fire.
To live a dying world to save send the fire today.
Oh see us on Your altar lay; we give our lives to You today.
So crown the offering now we pray. Send the fire today.
Send the fire today.
Send the fire today.

Poem: from ‘Sonnets with God’ by Caroline Attrill
There is the fire of Pentecost
Which warms our words,
In smouldering love for you, Lord
Our risen, our glorified Lord.
We burn for the brightness of your light.
For the dancing flames of your touch,
For the awesome sacrifice
Ending the darkness of the tomb.
In the heat of Pentecost fires,
Ignite our prayers for you Lord,
Catch the paper hymns
That sing on endless days.
The fires burn and cleanse
Our raw selves, Lord are yours.

Song: Consuming fire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPptwbMXrpo
There must be more than this, O breath of God come breathe within.
There must be more than this, Spirit of God we wait for You.
Fill us anew we pray. Fill us anew we pray.
Consuming fire fan into flame, a passion for Your Name.
Spirit of God fall in this place, Lord have Your way.
Lord have Your way with us.
Come like a rushing wind, clothe us with power from on high.
Now set the captives free, leave us abandoned to Your praise.
Lord let Your glory fall. Lord let Your glory fall.
Stir it up in our hearts Lord. Stir it up in our hearts Lord.
Stir it up in our hearts Lord, a passion for Your Name.

Poem: from Inspired Christian Poems by Rosemary Smith
The Day the Church was born
One hundred and twenty in that room,
waiting as they were bid.
Wondering what might happen,
In the meantime, they were hid.
They’d seen their master crucified,
They’d seen him risen once more.
They’d seen him as he left them,
And back to heaven he did soar.
They waited patiently,
And spent the time in prayer,
And hope and expectation
A sound of wind rent the air.
There were tongues of fire,
Which settled on everyone.
It was the Holy Spirit,
And the church of Christ was born.
It was the feast of Pentecost,
There were pilgrims from many lands.
The newly born church burst outside,
And peter held up his hands.
He and the others began to preach
“Believe in Jesus and be baptised”
Everyone understood his own tongue,
People were amazed and surprised.
They were cut to the heart for what they’d done,
Bur Peter said Christ would forgive.
If they truly repented and were Baptized,
The Holy Spirit in them would live.
They accepted with joy the message of life,
Yet for their sins they did mourn.
And three thousand souls were added that day,
The day the church was born.

Song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wFUk3Q_bPk
O thou who camest from above
the fire celestial to impart,
kindle a flame of sacred love
on the mean altar of my heart.
There let it for thy glory burn
with inextinguishable blaze,
and trembling to its source return
in humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire
to work and speak and think for thee;
still let me guard the holy fire
and still stir up the gift in me.
Still let me prove thy perfect will,
my acts of faith and love repeat,
till death thy endless mercies seal,
and make the sacrifice complete.

Poem: from Watching for the Kingfisher by Ann Lewin

Wait for the Spirit
Wait…..
Without expectation
Which might focus
Attention too narrowly,
So that we miss the coming.
Wait with expectancy, alert
Hearts, minds, hands and ears
Open to receive the gift.

Thought
PentecostThis picture is called “Free Spirit” and was painted by Maurice Bishop. It has come to represent many things to me over the years. I find it continually inspiring. One of the meanings I see in this is God’s Spirit falling like a dove, receiving it and being willing to
go out, spread your wings, leaving the crowd and not being afraid as the son (sun) in the picture is with us always. His gift of the Holy Spirit, which is represented here by a dove, soars along in life with us forever. What do you see in this picture? Are you willing to let his Holy Spirit fill you to overflowing?

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May the Lord smile on you, shine His light upon you.
May the Lord lift you, turn His face towards you.
Give you His peace, give you His peace.
May the Lord bless us and keep us.
May the Lord smile on us, shine His light upon us.
May the Lord lift us, turn His face towards us.
Give us His peace, give us His peace.
Blessed we came to this place today and blessed now we will go.
In the name of the Father, the Spirit and the Son.
Blessed we came to this place today and blessed now we will go.
In the name of the Father, the Spirit and the Son.
Blessed we came to this place today and blessed now we will go.
In the name of the Father, the Spirit and the Son.
May the Lord bless us and keep us.
May the Lord smile on us, shine His light upon us.
May the Lord lift us, turn His face towards us.
Give us His peace, give us His peace.
Go now in peace, go now in peace.
Go now in peace.
And the blessing of our God,
and the blessing of our God.
Go now in peace
and the blessing of our God.
