Home Service: Sunday 18 October 2020 | Theme: Is Jesus calling you?Compiled by Louise Ratcliffe

Prayer

Lord Jesus, As we still ourselves to concentrate on you, meet with us through your Holy Spirit. Fill us again to overflowing. Meet with us where we are all in our own individual homes and spaces. We long to be together as one again but can’t at present. We are gathered in our spirits if not bodily. Change and renew us we pray. Amen

We use our first song as a meditation and prayer as Jesus is present wherever we are.

Song: As we are gathered

As we are gathered Jesus is here
One with each other, Jesus is here
Joined by the Spirit, washed in the Blood
Part of the Body, the Church of God
As we are gathered Jesus is here
One with each other, Jesus is here

“Worship is the work of God – not a social gathering – and gives the strength to love and serve.” ~ Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

Scripture

A selection of verses of Jesus calling His disciples and sending them out

Jesus Calls His First Disciples (Matthew 4:18-22)

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve (Matthew 10: 2-8)

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20)

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Song: I will make you fishers of men

I will make you fishers of men
Fishers of men, fishers of men
I will make you fishers of men
If you follow me
If you follow me, if you follow me
I will make you fishers of men
If you follow me

Hear Christ calling come unto me
Come unto me, come unto me
Hear Christ calling come unto me
I will give you rest
I will give you rest, i will give you rest
Hear Christ calling come unto me
I will give you rest

Thought

The word “disciple” refers to a learner or follower. The word “apostle” means “one who is sent out.” While Jesus was on earth, his twelve followers were called disciples. After his resurrection and ascension, Jesus sent the disciples out to be His witnesses. They were then referred to as the twelve apostles. However, even when Jesus was still on earth, the terms “disciples” and “apostles” were used somewhat interchangeably. When Jesus called his first disciples, they were going about their daily business, doing what they always did, fishing. Simon Peter, Andrew, James and Johns obedience has always astounded me. They “At once” and “Immediately” left their fishing nets and followed Jesus. What would you have done? I think I would have needed to say goodbye, pack a bag maybe even pretend I didn’t hear while I thought about it….. I am not sure I would have been that instantly obedient!

Following Jesus was to be a total change and commitment and challenge for the rest of their lives. Jesus was to give them a challenge which he was going to enable them to carry out. He was going to give his power to them so they could heal the sick, raise the dead. They were to baptize in his name.

I wonder what they were thinking. Maybe “What me”. Can you put yourselves in their shoes for a moment? In Matthew it said some doubted. Well I think I would have done. This was new, they had been with Jesus and seen all the miracles that he had done and they were now going to be tasked with doing them in his authority. Also to baptize in the name of the father ,son and holy spirit wow!

Jesus challenges us today to follow him in much the same way. To make a complete u turn in life and walk with him. At the moment everything is so uncertain and changing in the world. The one thing that has never changed is Jesus love for us and being with us to support us through the challenging times.

What is he calling you to do at the moment? Perhaps make that first commitment to him just like the disciples and follow him or perhaps change an attitude of heart and mind……We can all be disciples of Jesus. We can encourage and pray for one another and be a Christian family for each other just like the first 12 disciples.

The song below talks about us following Jesus Anywhere and everywhere, what do you think?

Jesus invites us to follow him and we must each choose whether we will be his disciple .Becoming a disciple of Jesus is usually a step-by- step process. It’s learning through faith to trust and follow Him one step and one event at a time.

Song: Follow, Follow, I Would Follow Jesus

Down in the valley with my Saviour I will go,
Where the flowers are blooming and the sweet waters flow;
Everywhere He leads me I will follow, follow on,
Walking in His footsteps till the crown be won.

Follow! follow! I will follow Jesus!
Anywhere, everywhere, I will follow on!
Follow! follow! I will follow Jesus!
Everywhere He leads me I will follow on!

Down in the valley with my Saviour I will go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With His hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Danger cannot fright me if my Lord is near.

Follow! follow! I will follow Jesus!…

Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Saviour will my soul ever keep;
He will lead me safely in the path that He has trod,
Up to where they gather on the hills of God.

Follow! follow! I will follow Jesus!…

Song: I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.

Tho’ none go with me, I still will follow,
Tho’ none go with me I still will follow,
Tho’ none go with me, I still will follow;
No turning back, no turning back.

My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
My cross I’ll carry till I see Jesus,
My cross I’ll carry till I see Jesus;
No turning back, No turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me,
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
No turning back, no turning back.

Let us finish with singing Abba Father as a prayer

Song: Abba Father

Abba Father let me be
Yours and yours alone
May my will forever be
Ever more your own

Never let my heart grow cold
Never let me go

Abba Father let me be
Yours and yours alone
May my will forever be
Ever more your own

Never let my heart grow cold
Never let me go

Abba Father let me be
Yours and yours alone

Blessing

May the Father’s hand keep us from stumbling, the footprints of Jesus
give us confidence to follow, and the fire of the Spirit keep us warm and safe in our walk with God this day. May we feel the presence of our Saviour walking beside us and know the power of the Spirit in both our actions and our words. Amen
