Home Service: Sunday 25 October 2020 ~ The Beatitudes ~ Compiled by Louise Ratcliffe

Opening prayer
Lord as we meet with you and worship you this morning, settle us, still us. Let us set this time apart for you. May you fill us and restore us with your Holy Spirit, come Lord Jesus, come. Amen

As we start a new day let us praise and sing to our Lord who is with us
throughout all we will face today.
Song by Matt Redman

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul
Worship His Holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship Your Holy name

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes
Bless the Lord O my soul…
You’re rich in love
And You’re slow to anger
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find
Bless the Lord O my soul…
And on that day
When my strength is failing
The end draws near
And my time has come
Still my soul will
Sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years
And then forevermore
Bless the Lord O my soul…

Bible Reading: Matthew 5: 1-12
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,  and he began to teach them. He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Prayers for our world
Heavenly Father, We share with you our love and concern for those
around us in our world. We long for peace in our world. We pray for …
We bring before you the folk in … We share the pain with those facing grief, loss of employment, difficulties due to the pressure put on them from the covid virus … We pray for those who are working flat out to protect, look after and serve us in so many different ways … We pray for our Christian brothers and sisters around the world as we unite as one body of Christ together bringing before you the issues of our world. Lord we pray for our community nearer at home in Sandhurst. We pray that we may shine a light for you in our community and be ambassadors of love, grace and peace.
Hear our prayers as we offer them to you Lord Jesus. Amen

Graham Kendrick put this newly recorded version of his song together
with some friends as a response to the pandemic that has hit the world
this year.

O Lord, the clouds are gathering
The fire of judgment burns

How we have fallen!
O Lord, you stand appalled to see
Your laws of love so scorned
And lives so broken
Have mercy, Lord, (Men) Have mercy, Lord, (Women)
Forgive us, Lord, (Men) Forgive us, Lord (Women)
Restore us, Lord (All) Revive your church again
Let justice flow (Men) Let justice flow (Women)
Like rivers (Men) Like rivers (Women)
And righteousness like a never failing stream (All)
O Lord, over the nations now
Where is the dove of peace?
Her wings are broken
O Lord, while precious children starve
The tools of war increase
Their bread is stolen
Have mercy, Lord, (Men)…
O Lord, dark powers are poised to flood
Our streets with hate and fear
We must awaken!
O Lord, let love reclaim the lives
That sin would sweep away
And let your kingdom come
Have mercy, Lord, (Men)…
Yet, O Lord, your glorious cross shall tower
Triumphant in this land
Evil confounding
Through the fire your suffering church display
The glories of her Christ
Praises resounding!
Have mercy, Lord, (Men)…

In the above passage Jesus is primarily talking to his disciples and teaching them a rule for living although there may have been others that followed up the mountain too. I don’t think we know for sure the mix of the group. All we know is that Jesus removed himself to an area more conducive to teaching. The term beatitude comes from the Latin word beatus, meaning both “happy” and “blessed.” In the Bible it refers to the blessings in the passage in Matthew. They are a picture of what it means to live our lives for God and how blessings will follow. Jesus is showing us a way to live that is different to the ways of this world.

Blessings come from lowliness.

There are 3 traits mentioned in verses 3-5, poor in Spirit, those who mourn and those who are humble. As Christians we are called to stand up for the ways and values of Jesus which will sometimes be difficult and against the values of the world. Sometimes it may result in suffering and thinking about ourselves less and the needs of others more, but we will be rewarded ultimately for our faithfulness. The world tends towards power, talent, privilege, prestige, intelligence and gaining more of it to be successful. This is not how to pursue the kingdom of God. True blessings come from humbleness. What does it mean for us to be humble?

Blessings come from holiness.

In verses 6-9 we see 4 characteristics of holiness, a longing for
righteousness, mercy, purity of heart and peace-making. Righteousness
is wanting something to be the way it should be in God’s eyes, morally
good. Merciful is being kind and forgiving and being pure in heart
means surrendering our hearts to Jesus. Being a peacemaker in
practical terms is being humble, bringing about resolution and pointing
folk to Jesus the prince of peace. How can we seek peace in our lives
and be a peacemaker?

Blessings come from persecution

In verses 10-12. This one can sound really odd at first. But if we are to
stand out and be loving, holy, truthful, good, humble and righteous we
will stand out from the values of the world. We may be persecuted for
following Jesus way of living. As we seek to draw nearer to Jesus and his ways in our life he will be with us and will bless us and never leave us. How can we individually change in the coming days to show the love of Jesus to those around us and give them a picture of the kingdom of heaven?

Lord as we try to live out your kingdom values in the world around us give us the resources, wisdom and love to shine out for you. May we show your beautiful characteristics to those around us. We join now in the prayer that you taught us to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Song by Matt Redman

Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name
Blessed Be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name
Every blessing You pour out, I’ll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out I’ll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

A sung Gaelic Blessing

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the gentle night to you.
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you.
Deep peace of Christ,
Of Christ the light of the world to you.
Deep peace of Christ to you.

Take us and use us to love and serve you and all people, in the power of your Spirit and in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
